~ Enhanced rehabilitation with a heated pool ~

What is Hydrotherapy?

The word Hydrotherapy is derived from HYDRA (meaning water) and THERAPEIA (meaning Therapy). It is a type of physiotherapy t
reatment that is offered in a heated (34ºC) pool. Therapeutic exercises are carried out in the pool to allow greater comfort and range of movement as the water supports body weight. Being in the warm water increases circulation, reduces muscle-spasm and helps relieve pain.

"Hydrotherapy or Aquatic Physiotherapy is a specific physiotherapy technique which combines the properties of water with the knowledge and skills of the therapist, to make treatment more effective to improve the outcome of the rehabilitation process. Hydrotherapy is a physiotherapy treatment modality carried out in water by physiotherapist."
~ Definition developed by the Australian Physiotherapy Association in 1985.

Hydrotherapy treatment includes individual assessment, diagnosis and the development of a treatment program appropriate to each patient’s needs.
A supervised Hydrotherapy program can help improve a number of conditions including:
     ~ Back pain/sciatica/lumbar instability
~ Whiplash and other neck pain
     ~ Sports injuries
     ~ Tendinopathy
     ~ Balance/coordination problems
     ~ Shoulder and arm pain
~ Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia
     ~ Ankylosing spondylitis
     ~ Back and pelvic pain
     ~ Work and accident-related injuries
~ Rehabilitation after bone fractures, joint replacement or tendon repair.

can provide a number of benefits.

These include:

~ Relieving pain
~ Promoting relaxation
~ Mobilising joints to increase range of movement and strengthening muscles
~ Developing balance and coordination
~ Improving general fitness, muscle strength, flexibility and core stability.

Hydrotherapy has been shown to bring pain relief, combined with long-lasting improvements in joint mobility and muscle strength. It may be used alone or in conjunction with other rehabilitation programs. Hydrotherapy is often the first step for patients before they may progress to gym or land-based exercise programs.

Orthopaedic, spinal and arthritic conditions (amongst others) can respond really well to Hydrotherapy.  Exercises and techniques are specifically tailored to your needs with a view to you continuing exercises independently in your own time.
